What comes to your mind when you think of a modern world- cars, bikes, industries, right?
Well let me tell you, these are the main causes of air pollution which causes diseases like
asthma.
Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airway passages which causes the mucosal layer
and muscular layer of the bronchi to become thickened and causes enlargement of the
mucous gland. Asthma kills 1000 people every day worldwide and affects as many as 339
million people.

TYPES OF ASTHMA;

● Childhood-onset asthma- It is seen more in children who have hypersensitivity (type
1) i.e. allergies and autoimmune disorders. Hypersensitivity type 1 may be caused due
to pollen grains, hay fever or anaphylactic shock, etc. Asthma in children may be
treated with the appropriate treatment.

● Adult-onset asthma- Asthma in adults is persistent and is often present in people
associated with chronic inflammation and causes permanent damage to the lungs.
Adult-onset asthma is caused by allergies, obesity (it is one of the main factors), and
age also plays an important role in developing asthma.

CAUSES OF ASTHMA ;

● Allergies- It serves as one the main factor of causing adult-onset asthma as it causes
hypersensitivity causing increased secretion of the mucous and blocking the airway
passages.

● Smoking or tobacco- Smoking increases the risk of developing asthma especially
those children whose parents smoke.

● Environmental factors- Environment around is getting polluted day by day which
results in increased chances of developing asthma. Gases like nitrogenous oxides,
sulfurous oxides, and ozone, may cause asthma.

● Genetic- Parents may pass asthma to the newborn genetically.

● Obesity- Increased risk of developing asthma to the person who has excess body fat.

● Wheezing- It is characterized by the high pitched sound produced during breathing. It
is the most common symptom of asthma.

● Coughing

● Shortness of breath- when the required amount of oxygen is not met due to the
obstruction in the airway passage.

TREATMENT FOR ASTHMA ;

● Inhalers- Inhalers containing corticosteroids i.e. containing anti-inflammatory drugs.

● Mucolytics- Drugs which helps to dissolve the mucous and provide relief to the
difficulties in respiration.

● Anti-allergic drugs- These helps to reduce the inflammation and eventually helping to
provide aid in asthma.
